Why this Japan tour is for celiacs.
Every restaurant on the October 2026 Japan tour has been personally vetted and visted by Josh, our celiac founder, before we take a group there. A licensed Japanese-speaking host walks into every group meal with you and communicates protocols directly with the kitchen. Reservations are pre-arranged, translated dietary cards are provided, and hotels are notified in writing before arrival. We are honest about the limits. Third-party kitchens are never a zero-risk environment. But the process removes the vast majority of the exhausting research burden that celiac travellers carry when planning Japan on their own.
Built for the celiac who wants to travel again.
This tour is designed for adults with medically diagnosed celiac disease (or non-celiac gluten sensitivity) who have found international travel, particularly to Asia - anxiety-inducing or impossible to plan safely. Many of our travellers had stopped travelling internationally after their diagnosis before joining us. About 30% travel with a partner or friend who does not have celiac disease and simply wants to enjoy Japan alongside them. Comfortable walkers, not hikers. Most travellers are aged 24 to 60.
Josh, celiac founder.
Josh has celiac disease himself. He started Gluten Free Getaways after planning a trip to Japan with a friend and realising that every gluten-free traveller was independently duplicating the same weeks of exhausting research - safe restaurants, Japanese ingredients, translation, contingency plans. He built this so that the next celiac wouldn't have to.

March 2026 traveller notes.
Mark (March 2026) called it a marvellous experience - the meals, the accommodations, and unexpected highlights like the go-karting through Tokyo streets and the temple visits. Sharon (March 2026) highlighted the camaraderie of a small group and the quality of the meals throughout the trip.
Questions we hear every week.
Yes. Every restaurant on the itinerary has been personally visited and verified in person by our celiac founder Josh. A licensed Japanese host is present at every group meal to communicate protocols with the kitchen in Japanese. Reservations are pre-arranged. We are honest about limitations — we cannot fully control third-party kitchens — but the process removes the vast majority of risk that a celiac traveller carries on their own.
Traditional Japanese shoyu contains wheat, and it appears in almost everything. The safe alternative is tamari, a wheat-free soy sauce that quality Japanese restaurants stock. We speak Japanese at every restaurant to confirm tamari is used and cross-contamination is managed.
A maximum of seven travellers. We intentionally cap the group small because celiac-safe kitchens can only coordinate a handful of tailored covers per service without cutting corners.
Accommodation across the 11 days, all in-country ground transport including shinkansen and the Miyajima ferry, a licensed Japanese host at every meal, curated celiac-safe dining, pre-arranged reservations, translated dietary communication and 24/7 on-tour support. International flights are not included.
The tour departs on Monday 26 October 2026 and returns Thursday 5 November 2026 — 11 days on the ground across Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, Nara, Hiroshima and Miyajima.
